First look at the boys HS regional rankings
High school season is here. And with the arrival of the NSCAA fall national rankings comes the more fragmentary regional rankings. These mop up more teams in specific areas of the country that didn't necessary make the national top 25. Throughout the season, this space will tackle each boys and girls region and a few salient points about each from week to week.
Now that the season has begun for most of the country, here's a glimpse at each boys region and some of the most interesting movers and shakers.

Region II
This New York-centric region is topped by Arlington, which has had a hammerlock on elite status for years. The school won the Class AA state title in 2012 and appears reloaded for more glory this season. David Verdis is one of the most heralded players in the state and will be expected to carry Arlington to another title. Martin Luther King Jr., a Class A public school juggernaut in New York, has been to 18 consecutive PSAL semifinals and is tracking another title. MLK is nestled under Arlington as the region's No. 2.
Region III
Traveling further south, Region III primarily encapsulates New Jersey and Pennsylvania, which inevitably means St. Benedict's busts into the picture here. St. Benedict's is the national No. 1, and for good reason. The program, arguably the most elite high school boys team in the country, has won a nation-best 54 games entering the season. They can snap the state record they set over a decade ago with three more wins, and 21 wins sets the new national standard. Pittsburgh-area outfit Upper St. Clair, which went 22-2-1 last year, is the region's No. 2, while New Jersey dynamo Delbarton is No. 3.
Region IV
Maryland's DeMatha starts the season as this region's No. 1 after a disappointing end to 2012. Led by Ian Harkes, the son of John Harkes, Gonzaga won the Washington Catholic Athletic Association title and, in the process, snapped DeMatha's 62-game unbeaten streak. Gonzaga, which lost Harkes to Wake Forest in addition to several other key pieces, starts the season as the region's No. 8. Delaware squad Salesianum has won three straight state titles and eight of the state's last nine. They start as Region IV's No. 2-ranked team.
Region V
Coming off a Class 2A Indiana state title, Columbus North starts the season as this midwest region's No. 1 thanks in part to a quick 3-0-0 start. That's no mean feat considering Louisville's St. Xavier is sitting right on North's heels at No. 2. With its 3-0-1 start to the season, St. Xavier is now 56-0-3 in its last 59 games. That could be in jeopardy this year with just striker Joe Workman returning after scoring 18 goals this year, making St. X one of the most intriguing teams to monitor this season. Cross-town rival Trinity, which is No. 8 in this region after a 3-0-0 start, probably has at least as much talent as St. Xavier this season.
Region VI
Wisconsin and Minnesota schools make up this region chock full of talent. No team deserves more attention than Milwaukee's Marquette University High, which other teams will have dislodging from the No. 1 spot it currently occupies. Marquette has five starters back from a 23-1-2 team that won its third straight Division 1 state title in 2012. Brown commit Quinn English and Marquette pledge Danny Jarosz are both names to remember. Minneapolis Southwest enters the year as the No. 4 team in the region and as Minnesota's top-ranked team following a 3-0-0 start.
Region VII
There's an argument to be made that St. Louis's Christian Brothers, Region VII's opening-week No. 1, is the preeminent soccer program in the nation. Over the last 42 years it's certainly been the most successful. Coach Terry Michler has a nation-best 862 wins over the past four-plus decades, and CBC improbably won another state title over Chaminade (Region VII's No. 3) last year with a lot of young faces. With six starters back, including the back line nucleus, CBC will be better than the 25-5-1 team from last year. No. 4 Washburn Rural, Kansas' top-ranked program, is fresh off a second 6A state title in four years and brings back breakout star Tyler Burton.
Region VIII
This region is a minefield of massive programs in the western quarter of the country. Northern California outfit Jesuit has produced players like Adam Jahn and Amobi Okugo, and they've won a staggering 24 straight league titles. Jesuit, it goes without saying, is deserving of its No. 1 ranking. Their game this season against Oregon's Jesuit, ranked No. 4 in the region, will be one of the best high school boys games of the year. Aurora, Colo. program Smoky Hill clocks in at No. 3 as that state's top-ranked program, while Albuquerque lands three teams on the list in No. 5 Cibola, No. 8 Albuquerque High and No. 13 Sandia.
