Saints Fall In Overtime At Quinnipiac
Freshman goalkeeper Greg Monroe recorded five saves as Siena Men’s Soccer fell to MAAC foe Quinnipiac on the road in overtime Wednesday afternoon, 1-0. The Clifton Park, New York native tallied his seventh match of the year with five or more recoveries, notching three in the second half of play to help send the affair into extra time.
Siena (3-7-3, 2-3) kept the top team in the MAAC quiet for over 90 minutes of play, with defenders Kent Mohlar, Eamonn Conway, Eddie Dakwa and Andreas Rosnes leading the charge. Offensively, the team had a corner kick try in each half and several near-misses including a close individual effort from Tim Ugo in the 70th minute that sailed just wide of the right post.
Quinnipiac (6-4-1, 4-0) extended its winning streak to six games following the result, remaining as one of three MAAC squads undefeated in conference play. The Bobcats remained offensively active throughout the contest, with Matthew Taylor leading the way with five shots.
The game-winning score came in the ninth minute of the first overtime period and the 99th overall in the match, as Eamon Whalen found an open lane and powered a home a score to solidify a Bobcat victory.
Overall, QU held a 23-5 advantage in shots and a 5-2 lead in corner kicks. Ugo and Birgir Thorsteinsson led the way offensively for the Saints, with each registering a pair of shots.
Looking to rebound from a three-game losing skid, Siena returns home on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 3:00 p.m. to host defending MAAC Champion Fairfield at the Siena Turf Field.
