Creighton University vs. Santa Clara
The number 3 nationally ranked Creighton Bluejays took a very impressive record against California teams into a two game southern California road trip this past weekend. The Bluejays were 14-0-3 against any and all California schools in their last 17 games.
Santa Clara has a national reputation of fielding a strong side and boasts two national championships in mens soccer. The Broncos play in a beautiful stadium that also hosts the San Jose Earthquakes. None of this seemed to bother the visiting Jays from Omaha, who came to southern California and bossed the game. The Jays played had multiple opportunities and controlled the midfield for the majority of the encounter. Creighton is a team that can strike quickly but can also wear teams down through their pressure and possession passing. Against Santa Clara it took till the 68th minute before the Jays could make a break through. Redshirt freshman Christian Blandon’s loan goal off of a pass from freshman Vincent Keller on the right side of the penalty area was enough to lead the Bluejays to victory. Blandon has scored two goals in this last two games and who’s energy on and off the ball has proved vital for creating scoring chances.
Santa Clara pushed to equalize but were turned away by four saves by Creighton goalkeeper, Alex Bolowich. The Bluejays outshot the Broncos 14-11.
