2011 Boys NCAA ODP Interregional | Day 1
December 10, 2011
VESTAVIA, Ala. - The annual US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (US Youth Soccer ODP) Boys NCAA Interregional kicked off today with the 1994 and 1995 age groups facing off at Rathmell Sports Park in Vestavia, Ala.
Continuing its tradition of elite competition and player development, youth from the nation's top player identification program, US Youth Soccer ODP, will train and compete in front of national staff and collegiate coaches to maximize their exposure for selection to the next level of play. More US Youth Soccer ODP players have been called into Youth National Team camps than any other ID program, including 129 of 148 players called into U-14, U-15, U-17 and U-18 camps since September 2011.
Highlights from today's matches:
1994
Region II started the weekend off with a 2-1 win over Region I Friday. Region I took the lead in the 10th minute off the head of Thomas Trupo. That lead held until the 71st minute when Armando Hipolito leveled for Region II on a PK and Daniel Szczepanek netted the game winner in the 80th.
Goals came early and often between Region III and Region IV. Jaime Velasco started the scoring with goals in the 2nd and 5th minutes for Region IV. Region III then rattled off four straight goals, a double by Connor Fleming and strikes by Will Cross and Raul Gonzalez, to take a 4-2 just after halftime. Region IV showed resilience, battling back for a 5-4 win with goals by Aaron Caprio, Matt Arbogast and Peter Puertas in the 67th, 73rd and 80th minutes, respectively.
1995
Region II continued its winning ways with a 4-1 victory over Region I in the 95 age group. Region II's Kaelon Fox scored the lone first-half goal as he punched home a ball in the box after a scramble. Brock Fitzgerald added to the lead, heading home a corner from Fox in the 58th. Mohammed Youssef finished out the scoring for Region II with two unassisted goals, including a low-driven black in the 60th. Peter Pearson pulled a goal back for Region I with a header in the 61st minute.
It was a tale of two halves between Region III and Region IV. Robert Carson gave Region III a 1-0 lead in the 35th as he finished on a build up that came from the left side of the field during the run of play. That goal scoring formula worked again in the 38th minute, with Jackson Boonstra this time on the receiving end of the left-sided build up for a goal. Region IV battled back in the second have with goals by Matthew Coffey in the 62nd and Christopher Chertude in the 69th. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.
